Keyword Research

Expert Author Kathy H

The process for Keyword research is an important one.

First of all, you need to be able to give people what they want. And the way we find that out is by finding out what people are searching for. Once we know what they are searching for we can supply them with what they want. The same goes for writing articles. We need to know what people are interested in reading.

Therefore Keyword research is very important. Fortunately with keyword research tools we are able to find out what products, services, or articles people are interested in. One such keyword tool to use is SEO Keywords; (**Location of this tool can be found at the bottom of the article.)  You can sign up on this site and use the tool for free.

Here is how it works.

By typing in your keyword in the research box it will bring back results showing how many times a day that particular keyword or phrase was searched for by various search engines. As you scroll down the page you will find derivatives of the keyword or words you entered and how many times they were searched for. The problem is, usually the higher the number of searches of the keyword the more sites you would be competing with. What you want to do is to type your keyword into Google with (" keyword " ) the quotation marks on it and the click search and Google will tell you how many other sites you are competing with in the little blue bar just under the search box.

Example - If you were to do a keyword research with the Keyword Research tool and the results showed that according to Google, or Yahoo that they were getting 300 hits a day searching for that word or words you would think that was great, but if you now type that keyword into Google with the quotations marks around it, depending that subject matter or keywords you may find that there are 5,500,000 other sites using those keywords and competing for front page exposure. What you want to do is check the variations of your keyword or keywords and find one that is getting a decent number searches say 30 or 35 a day but have a lot less competing pages in Google. These words are often referred to as long tailed keywords. By using these words you will have a much better chance of exposure on the front page or even the second.
