Keeping the Teeth Bright After Whitening

The best way to look at teeth whitening is in two ways. Firstly how the teeth look today in terms of their colour and potential staining and then what you would want them to look like after teeth whitening. Secondly do you want to keep the results for the long term? If the answer is yes then the emphasis is on you to keep up whitening and good dental care and not on the product and service.

So lets give an example of Mary who is 33 years old, smokes and drinks tea. Her teeth were whiter when she was twenty years old and have gradually stained over the years to their current colouration. Mary regularly sees her dentist and her teeth are in good shape.

Mary has organised the bleaching trays with her dentist and will sleep with the trays in her mouth for fourteen consecutive nights which will slowly whiten the teeth. During the fourteen days Mary has reduced her daily intake of tea and cigarettes. After the program the teeth have whitened by around six shades and Mary is happy with her new smile.

Now I have two questions to ask - Do you think it is likely Mary will stop drinking tea and smoking every day to maintain her white teeth? Secondly how long do you think Mary's new smile will last?

Mary is a fictional character for the purpose of this article but it is likely Mary will continue to smoke and drink tea and then the results will likely to last a few months if Mary did nothing to maintain the smile.

Now the great thing here is that Mary has the bleaching trays and could use the trays once every six to eight weeks to maintain the smile. In that time period a small amount of staining would re-appear and by using the trays again will ensure the teeth re-whiten again.

This makes teeth whitening an ongoing effort but best to something little and often and this is better for the teeth than doing huge treatments every twelve or eighteen months time.

As we age sometimes the enamel will wear and this will make the teeth even more porous than normal but with diet and enamel taken in to consideration the fight against staining is a continuous one if you want to have white teeth.

Ensuring you brush your teeth twice per day and floss regularly and see the hygienist once per week to remove and plague will also be a big help to keep the teeth bright and white as having nice coloured teeth is no substitute for overall good dental health and sometimes this is compromised. Good luck with your whitening goals!
