Maintaining a water pond in the house seems a painstaking job, most especially for first-timers. You must understand that in order to keep your pond clean, you must be ready with the right pond cleaning supplies. There is plenty of equipment available but it is not easy to find out which ones to use.
All water ponds need your attention and time when it comes to maintenance. But the type that requires the most of your budget, time and labour is the fish pond. Since there are living creatures that survive in your water feature, it is a must that the water and all the other parts of the pond should be regularly and properly cleaned. And of course, if you have already spent most of your money in the installation of the whole pond, you will not want it to consume too much scum and dirt and let it die. So might as well spend another dime and time to keep it alive.
The initial equipment you will need is the pond filtration and ventilation system of the pond. This system is necessary most especially if you are too preoccupied by work or other things and you tend to neglect the responsibility of removing dirt and debris that fall in the water. What it does is keeping the water free from foreign objects that accidentally fall in it. And it is also responsible for keeping the nitrogen level in the water suitable for the fish.
Usually, tap water is contaminated with chlorine which makes it suitable for human consumption. However, if you use it to fill your fish pond the chlorine content is very harmful not just to the fish but also to the other aquatic living creatures in the pond. Therefore, the water needs to be dechlorinated. Water conditioners are the best option to remove the chlorine content of the water. Aside from its capability of removing chlorine, it can also reduce the amount of ammonia and nitrate in the water making it more eco-friendly.
Aside from the pond filtration system of the pond, you will also need to buy a few pond cleaning agents to keep the pond in its good shape. One of which are the beneficial bacteria. They come in various shapes and sizes, liquid form to powder form. What they do is they break down the organic wastes excreted by the fish and produced by the food uneaten. Like the water conditioners, beneficial bacteria also contribute to the reduction of ammonia in the water. Although they are so called "bacteria", they are not harmful to the life in the pond as they seem.
You may also consider buying chemical-based algaecides that are readily available in the market. However, these algae-killing agents may have bad effects especially on the living organisms and creatures that dwell in the water. It is still your decision if you will go for this type of algaecide or the natural algaecides available in the market.
There are many things to consider when maintaining the cleanness of your fish pond. The supplies are just there to serve as agents of cleaning. But it is still up to you, being the owner of the pond if you will spend time and money to make your pond as pleasing as it can be.
