If you are going to work with Joomla, then having access to a glossary may be necessary so that you will be able to learn the language. Here are common terms associated with this system.

A
Administrative Template: A template used for the back-end of your website. It's the actual layout for what the administrator will see.

Administrator Back end: This is where the administrator, webmaster or editor logs into to manage all aspects of the website.

B
Back end: This is where the administrator logs into to manage all aspects of the website.

Banner: This is a system core component that allows you to manage the banner ads located on the website.

C
Cascading Style Sheet (CSS): This is written in code and allows you to separate the content information from layout and style of the website.

CMT: This is an acronym for components, modules and templates.

CMTP: This is an acronym for components, modules, templates and plugins.

Component: This is a core element of the software functionality. It is usually located in the center or main content area of the template.

Core: The compressed file format collection that contains all of the initial system information. All components, modules, plugins and templates are extensions of the core functionality.

E
Extension: A module, component, plugin, language or template that extends the initial functionality of the Joomla installation.

F
Front-end (site front-end): This is the side of the website that a visitor will see.

H
HTML: This is written in code and is short for Hyper Text Mark-up Language. This is the language that is used to create documents throughout the web.

J
Javascript: This is a language that is used to allow interactivity on a website. It is fairly small and fast.

Joomla: The most popular open source content management system (CMS) available today.

M
Module: This is an extension of the core that can be displayed anywhere that the template will let it be displayed.

O
Open source (OS): Describes the intention and attitude of the community developed software. In other words, anyone can write code for extensions of the program and the program will run it.

Operating System (OS): This is the underlying software program that runs your computer/server. It can be Windows, Linux or Mac.

P
Plugin: A small extension of the systems core. It extends the functionality of the initial Joomla software. It is task oriented.

S
Site Front End: This is the side of the website that the visitor will see.

Site Template: The template that allows you to define the layout and style of the front end of the website.

T
Template: This defines the layout and style of the website, whether it is a back end template or a front end template. Depending on which template it is, will determine where it will work at; either the back end or the front end.
