Expert Author Pollux Parker

Born on May 26, 1907, Marion Robert Morrison or popularly known as John Wayne, was an Academy award winning actor, producer, and director. Famous for having a unique voice, height, and walk, John Wayne exemplified "rugged masculinity" and became an American icon. In 1991, he was listed by the American Film Institute as the 13th Greatest Male Stars of All Time.

John Wayne was born in the city of Winterset in Iowa. At first, his middle name was Mitchell however his parents changed it to Robert. His family lived in Palmdale then to Glendale in the state of California. During his teen years, Wayne worked for an ice cream shop. He was also a member Order of DeMolay, where he became active. He went to Wilson Middle School in Glendale in high school. He studied pre-law at the University of Southern California through a football scholarship grant. However, due to an injury, he lost his scholarship and was forced to stop studying.

Soon after, he started working for local film studios. He landed bit parts in movies such as "Brown of Harvard" in 1926, "The Dropkick" in 1927, and "Salute" in 1929. In 1930, he appeared in his first starring role through the movie "The Big Trail". It was in that movie that he adapted the screen name "John Wayne". The movie has spent more than $2 million. It was filmed using the usual 35mm and Grandeur process. Unfortunately, since only few theaters have the needed technology to show the movie, "The Big Trail" was a major flop.

His biggest break came in 1939 through a commercially successful movie "Stagecoach". Soon after, he has made several hit movies that gave him Academy Award and Golden Globe Awards.
