The job skills or skill set of each person is defined by what they have experienced in life. The stay at home mother, the graduate student, the blue collar worker trying to support their family...each and every one of them has a different skill set required for their daily jobs and yet they are also applicable to fields outside their current realm. These types of skills are often referred to as transferable.
Transferable skills are those abilities that you have honed to your own level of expertise based off of your life experiences. The stay at home mom for example is often times very good at handling scheduling, finances and party planning. These highlighted alone can point her in the direction of a receptionist, secretary, financial planner, or even host should the desire or opportunity arise. How about the graduate student? Perhaps the field of study they chose is not accepting fresh faces just yet, but they are in need of work until they find a match. Dependent upon their capacity to analyze data, find the proverbial needle in a haystack and their non studious activities they may find a temporary fit in anything ranging from a research assistant to a computer programmer.
When you take into account the various skills needed to perform any given job whether paid or not, you open up a world of possibility as well as the job market for those seeking a change. Go ahead, take a chance. Who knows what hidden treasure you will find? A diamond in the rough can be hard to spot, but consider the application of the individuals acquired skills and you may find your next super star in the most unlikely of places.
