Sarah was hardly ever late getting to work, but today she was late by nine minutes. Since she woke up she had had one disaster after another and her day was not going well. She had a very mean boss named Dr. Dobson. He hated it when his employees were late. The last time she was late she almost lost her job.
This job was the only on that Sarah could find that would pay so well. She thought about quitting many times and find a job with a friendly boss, but after measuring the pros and cons she considered the pay to outweigh the con of having a strict boss.
Because Dr. Dobson was such a perfectionist, he had to have the perfect system in his medical practice to keep his employees organized and to keep all records in order. He searched diligently to find a system that would please his high expectations. After much diligent research he found a system where he could keep all his medical records on file electronically. Sarah actually loved this electronic medical record software because it made her job easier. Dr. Dobson also had medical practice management software installed to help keep record of patients' appointments and billing information.
Dr. Dobson always brought in the healthiest people to examine. He even insisted that all his employees pass physical exams. She thought doctors would want to see people that were sick and needed them. That was what doctors were in the business to do, heal sick people. He even insisted that the healthiest ones come back for check-ups. When nothing was found amiss, Dr. Dobson would give them his services for free.
When Sarah arrived late to the office her boss wasn't acting normal at all. He was so excited that he couldn't stop hugging his employees and dancing around.
"Did you hear?" he asked. "They found one. I knew they would. Oh this is so exhilarating. I will have to move up my completion date. Oh, not to worry we are almost ready anyway."
"What in the world is going on? Have they found a cure for some terrible disease?" she thought, "and he hasn't noticed that I arrived to work late."
"Alright," He laughed, "I need an emr on each of my top candidates. Here they are," he said, as he handed a list of names to her. "I want them sent to the email address at the bottom of the list. They must be sent now for this to work."
She glanced at the first few names on list, and thought, "These are the healthiest patients the doctor has ever seen. These were the people who Dr. Dobson always gave the most attention to. She went right to work retrieving the files from the emr software through his emr system and prepared to send them.
"Never mind sending those files," the doctor yelled, "I just remembered they can just access them from their laboratory. Oh, I am so excited. I forgot how user friendly these electronic medical records are."
Sarah was mystified. She wondered what was going on. He looked to be in a very good mood so she decided to ask.
"Dr. Dobson," Sarah began, "What is all the fuss about?"
"Oh, no one has told you? I feel privileged to be the first to let you know that scientists have finally found a planet just like the one we live on! This is by far one of the most crucial findings in history. I knew after I saw that global warming documentary that scientists would find a new planet to live one! I have been part of this special project to help send the healthiest people to begin a new race on the planet. We are going to survive the end of this earth after all."
Sarah got an uneasy feeling. This was just too weird to be true.
"Sarah, use the medical practice management system and find the addresses and phone numbers of the people on the list. We have to get ahold of all of them ASAP."
Sarah was stunned. She asked, "Do they know they have been chosen to colonize a new planet? Do you think they will come if you just call them?"
"What a question, Sarah! Of course they will come." he replied.
"Well I certainly wouldn't want to go!" thought Sarah as she continued to look down the list. Then she saw it right after Terry Gilmore, her name, Sarah Williams. That was when she fainted.
When she woke it was dark and everything was quiet. She turned on the light and looked around. Everything was gone. The office had been stripped clean of all its furnishings.
A sticky note was all that was left.
It read: Sarah, we had to leave you behind, sorry but you must not be as healthy as we thought. We can't take chances with this special project. Please see a doctor about your fainting spell, Sincerely Dobson.
Sarah was so thankful.
