Sensitive Skin

While for most people, dry and itchy skin is only a passing phase, for others it may be worse. The scientific name for itching is pruritus, and coupled with drying, it can lead to a recurring cycle, the way a little scratch will only lead to the need for more scratches. When the skin loses its moisture, the surface can crack and get chapped, leading to more itching. In general, however, pruritus can be localized or it may affect the body in general.

Local and General Pruritus

Localized pruritus can occur on any spot of the body, most especially on the scalp, eyelids, nose, ears, anus, limbs, chest or back. When a rash is also present, it is easier to identify the cause and prescribe treatment. On the other hand, general pruritus stems often from a systemic ailment and is not accompanied by a rash. This type is often more difficult to diagnose and may be caused by various infections, iron deficiency, liver disease, kidney disease, or thyroid malfunction.

Simple Remedies

When drying is the cause of your itch, however, the main factor at work is a loss of moisture. This can happen in several ways. Too much exposure to sunlight and ultra-violet rays can cause skin damage or burns, which dehydrate the skin. To remedy this problem, put on sun blocks with a sun protection factor (SPF) of at least 15. For some people, skin is naturally prone to dehydration. This can be helped by taking shorter baths and by applying creams onto the skin right after bathing to lock in moisture. Creams and oils are most effective, while lotions are often too watery and may 10 to 15 minutes in the shower should suffice, to retain as much of the natural moisturizers as possible. Soaps can also be damaging, so people suffering from itches should use moisturizing hypoallergenic soaps.

For most people, shortening shower time and applying creams with SPF is enough for relief. But if itching and dryness continues, consult a doctor.
