It is Always the New Person That Finds the Innovations - You Know Why?

Expert Author Lance Winslow

Over the years, as an entrepreneur I've done quite well because my companies were always on the leading edge of innovation. Many people look at what we had accomplished and they were blown away, but I must tell you much of the innovation came from our customers, our franchisees, our team members, our vendors, and our employees. Interestingly enough, it was always the new guy, or the newcomer who came up with the best ideas. Why do you suppose that is?

After retirement, I had a lot of time to reflect on such questions and I've come to the realization and conclusion that since the newcomers came from somewhere else they brought with them experience and observations from other industries. When those observations and experiences were applied to this new way of doing business in our company, these new people would find solutions that we could have never thought of.

Additionally, once you get too caught up in the day-to-day operations, along with all the chaos and controversy around you all the time, sometimes you stop looking for solutions and innovations, and you turn your mind off, and just complete the tasks at hand. A new person coming into the business will look over what's going on and observe it, they will ask questions such as; "why are you doing it that way?"

These are perhaps questions we would not have asked of ourselves because that is the way we did it, that is the way which worked, and is the way we've been doing it for quite a while. Of course, all those answers are pretty silly and irrelevant to the newcomer who is observing what we are doing, thinking of the easier ways to get it done. This perhaps is the biggest reason that it is always the new guy who finds the bold new innovations. Perhaps you should please consider all this for your company.
