Many married couples find themselves asking "Is it possible for my marriage to survive infidelity?" And the simple answer to that question is "YES". Anything is possible if both parties are willing to work with each other to find the reason that the infidelity happened and find a way to make sure that it does not happen again. But if either you, or your spouse, are not interested in working or talking about the how and the why's, then the marriage may be entering its final stage and will not survive.

So the first step is for you and your spouse to get together and talk about the event. It may be very painful for you and your spouse to talk about it, but getting it out in the open will allow you to search for clues for why it even happened.

Listen to what your spouse is saying. This is a good time to just sit back and let your spouse talk. Listen to the reasons that this affair came about. If they are talking with you, then it had to be a mistake. They may have been under great stress and were weak. Only they can communicate what happened to you. And if you are breaking in every 2 minutes with the crying and the questions, your spouse could shutdown.

Take turns talking. Use an egg timer and allow your spouse to have the first ten minutes of the floor. Once there time is up, it is your turn to express your pain and how you feel about the situation. Do not bottle anything up.

Forgive one another. This may be a very difficult part of the process, but if either of you want the marriage to continue, there needs to be a sense of forgiveness. You do not have to start trusting your spouse right away. Communicate that you are going to forgive your spouse, but that they are going to need to earn back your trust.
