Do your staff members drink enough water at work? Ample drinking water is essential in hot weather for anyone and when you have people working for you in that sort of weather, it's even more important as dehydration and illness can happen quickly in extreme heat.

How much water should your staff be consuming?

Adequate water consumption needs will vary, depending on many factors including: gender, size, age, and amount of daily activity. If your staff members are physically active in their roles, they will need even more hydration than, say, an office worker who spends the vast majority of their shift sitting stationary, at a desk. Providing fresh, clean water to everyone will keep productivity up without staff falling down from heat exhaustion. Suggest with signage in coffee areas that staff consume enough water, such as eight glasses a day. Notify them that coffee, for instance, can dehydrate even though it is made mostly of water. Make your staff aware of this as well as make cool and fresh water available, particularly when the weather is particularly hot. Soft drinks do not supply your people with adequate hydration either. Most people are aware of this but a gentle reminder won't hurt and can keep everyone in better spirits when the weather is barely bearable.

There are plenty of ways that a company can supply its staff with adequate water, such as:

• A bottle-fed water cooler
• Plumbed in water cooler

If your staff is out on the job, it's a good idea to supply them with drinking water that they can take on the road. But for the vast majority of workers who are indoors, a water cooler is, of course, a more practical solution. If your work place is large, consider several hydration stations, placed strategically throughout the building.
