How do you treat your list?
1. Ignore mostly and demand something every blue moon
2. Nurture daily, tend, care, work with, assist, support
3. I forget
I was out on the trail with my horse Dakotah last week and it struck me that a list will respond to you the way a pet does. If you leave your pet alone, never talk, just occasionally feed and care for your pet with bare minimum outlay of energy, what happens? You say "Sit" and the dog looks at you like, right? "When? Now? I think I'll go chase a Frisbee."
Now let's take the scenario where you are always working with your dog, you've got a very glad dog indeed. You spend time walking, giving opportunities to get more in touch with what your dog needs, and then you ask your dog to jump over a fence for you. "Of course! Why not? Let's go?" responds the glad dog.
Here are three powerful strategies to build the responsiveness of your list.
Remember to give, then get. Connect your list to resources that can benefit them. Find a coupon for Google AdWords. Send a new tip on how to generate results on Facebook. Stop and consider how your list might benefit from your experiences and insight.
Be consistent. If you communicate once a week, stick with that. If you communicate daily, stick with that. Your list will ultimately reflect people who like whatever methods you personally take to work with them. It's not "more right" to communicate one set number of times per week. However, when you make a drastic change, for instance you suddenly hit the list daily when you've been communicating weekly, you're going to see a bunch of fallout. Just stick to a plan.
If you have nothing to say, don't say it. Work hard to have meaningful conversations consistently.
Treat your list precious like it is. You won't be sorry.
