Custom hair replacement is a term that is used to describe almost any hair system that isn't purchased off the shelf. However, there is a big difference between what most companies call a "custom" hair system and what free-styled Hair calls a custom system. Most hair replacement companies are not in the hair replacement business, but rather the service business. Their goal is to have you have to come back every month for either a new system or service on the old one.
According to Merriam-Webster's dictionary the definition of custom is, made or performed according to personal order. Under that definition most so called hair systems could be called custom. The truth is that the majority of "custom" systems out there are no different then a hair system that was off the shelf except for the size. Most hair systems are the same. They are net based systems where the hair attached to the net base by tying it in with little knots. The hair can't be styled except in the style the system was made. Of course since the person is selecting their color, hair style and hair density they are under the illusion of customization.
These systems are very inexpensive running around $50-$80 wholesale. The hair replacement company sells these as part of a service package where the client receives anywhere from 6-24 systems a year and pays a monthly fee to get the system taken off and replaced. These monthly fees can run $100-$500 per month and in some cases you have to pay $1,000-$1,500 up front to join.
True hair replacement is not about selling a product that needs to be replaced often or even serviced often. I believe in a natural looking hair system that can last years. Most hair replacement businesses are buying their systems from a company that is making them overseas, mostly in China. So the company is really more of a middleman for a system that you could purchase on the internet for 1/10 the price.
