Do baby boomers struggle with lack of confidence when it comes to running a business? As a fellow baby boomer, I can only speak from experience and what I hear others say. And the answer is "yes!"
As a baby boomer, you may have spent the majority of your life working for someone else, being told what to do and when to have it done. Or maybe you have spent the past twenty years at home raising kids. Both these situations can cause you to question whether you can really be successful at running your own business.
Lack of confidence can put up a huge roadblock in your path of finding purpose and freedom by running your own business. It says, "Who me? Who am I kidding?" I have been there, fellow baby boomer, and let me tell you, do not believe this. If you have a strong desire to make this work, you can do it!
I stayed home with my kids, then when they reached school age, we homeschooled them. So I did not do other work for about twenty years. Then, after we were finished homeschooling, I wanted to do something else with my time. I enjoyed being home, and still had family situations that required me to be flexible with my time. So I began to search for a home business opportunity.
I had no experience in running a business, but had the desire to do so for a long time. So that was my starting point. I wanted to make this work. I started out by owning an online bookstore, and then moved into my current business. I loved both and love working from home!
I do feel it is important to choose something you will really enjoy, as this can help you stay motivated during the challenging times. Being the "boss" now, you will need to find self-motivation and perseverance to keep going. Plus, doing something you already know something about will help build confidence as you share what you know with others.
When you are tempted to say, "I can't do this!" Remember you can! Your business will be starting out small and growing, and you can grow with it. You can always outsource the tasks you feel inadequate in or eventually, may even be able to afford hiring some consistent help.
As a baby boomer, you have a lot of life experience. This can translate into help for running your own business. If you have managed your family and your house, you can take it a step further and run your own business.
Is it for everyone? Absolutely not. But if you possess the desire, can motivate yourself, and are persistent, you can make this work. Don't let a lack of confidence keep you stuck where you are. You will never know until you try!
