Is Homeschooling Really Worth The Effort?

For many parents, they would automatically say in concurrence that home schooling works for them. They would even present documentation to show how their child's grades have improved since being home schooled. Further, many parents have revealed that by partcipating in this type of learning, it has provided them the opportunity to think outside the box. They have been able to come up with creative ways to teach their children rather than attempting to place their children in a cookie cutter type environment where "one size fits all" for teaching and learning.

By being home schooled parents would not to adhere to a rigorous schedule such as a typical school would be expected to follow or adhere to. Instead of math in the morning, a parent homeschooling their child, could decide to take them to the zoo and maybe later that afternoon, conduct a thirty minute session in math at home. Parents would have more flexibility in how they wanted to home school their children. Another excellent example would be to take their child to the local museum or zoo for that day as part of their education and this could be considered a field trip for them that day.

Statistics also indicate according to many parents that schools are not as safe as they should be. The worst fear of most students and many parents supportive of home schooling is being bullied on schools' playgrounds or to make matters worse, guns, drugs, sexual harassment and a host of other terrible crimes at school. In schools today:

1. 85% of Public Schools recorded at least one violent crime, theft or other crime occurred at their school within the past year.

2. Only 46% of those Public Schools took disciplinary action against those students, including suspensions lasting 5 or more days.

3. Between 2007-2008 there were 21 homicides and 5 suicides of school age children between 5-18.

4. Schools are still passing children who can't read because they are not labeled with a "learning disability".

5. Schools expel students who caused disruptions rather than attempting to help them.

6. Schools send children to detention school that only run 2 hours a day and home after that and they call that's called punishment.

If teachers only paid a little more attention to some of these students rather than crucifying them, both behavior and grades could possibly improve. Yet, many schools seemed to just throw them aside! School personnel will tell you that there is just not enough money in the budget to provide the funds that will enable them to give the extra attention that many of our students need. So unless one's child does not have a disability, where does that leave the parent who has a child with no disability?

Going to school should be an exciting experience for children, but because of the myriad of problems existing in school today, some parents have decided to take on the task themselves. As a result, many parents had to quit their jobs to ensure that their children received a quality education. The education of children is an important task, especially in today's world. And many parents have decided to do something about this by homeschooling their children. They feel it is part of their job to help their children make it through graduation and on to adulthood. In fact, many are in consensus that if homeschooling helps to keep your child out of dropping out of school, then lets homeschooled.

To go even further, in the 2007-2008 school year the National dropout rate was 4.1% that is over 600,000 students out of 14,808,821 enrolled during 9th-12th grades. With this information provided, many parents in conclusion definitely feel that homeschooling is their best and only option.
