Is Golf Impossible With Arthritis?

Got diagnosed with arthritis? If you're starting to get worried that having arthritis means giving up your favorite game, well, worry no more. Unless you are in a very advanced stage where you can hardly stand up, or are suffering from paralysis, there is no reason for you to stop playing golf. Your doctor will most likely even recommend a game of golf, but would only advice you adjust your game so that you will not be pushing yourself beyond your limits.

Arthritis is the general word used to describe inflammation of the joints which can result to severe pain. It can affect the hands and the wrists, the hips, the knees and the spine.

Although it is often remedied by pain relievers and anti-inflammatory medications, the only way to improve this condition is to get into a good exercise routine that will increase blood flow as well as strengthen the joints, and tone the muscles. Golf for arthritis is nothing new, as it has proven to be a good way for people suffering from the disease to improve the conditions of their joints.

Playing golf, despite being inflicted with arthritis can increase your flexibility and can help you regain your balance. If your arthritis is in its early stages, stay off the golf cart and do as much walking as you could. It will help the blood to circulate better, and can also improve your endurance.

Although it is not uncommon for people to use golf for arthritis remedy, it is also important to know one's limits, and to listen to what your body is telling you. If there is excruciating pain, or if you are unable to move any further, do not hesitate to cut the game short, take a break or better yet, go home and take a good rest. It is also important to keep yourself hydrated while in the golf course by drinking plenty of liquids while playing. This will not just prevent you from getting dehydrated, but it will also help you feel refreshed.

One thing that is essential when playing golf for arthritis, is to remember to wear gloves and wrist braces. It is also better to keep pain relievers at hand, just in case the pain becomes too unbearable.

After your game of golf, take some time to relax under a warm shower. If you feel anything sore, apply ice on the affected area for a few minutes. Do some easy stretches that may relieve the pain.

If however, after resting for over an hour, you are still feeling the pain, and you see some swelling starting on the joints, consult a doctor right away to apply some relief on the affected area.
