If you're looking to enter the field of forum marketing, you might be considering whether to approach this from a long or short term direction. Both of these are viable alternatives depending on what your aims are. But, when should you choose to market for the long term and when should you choose to market for the short term? This article explores these two different options.
First of all, let's consider the long term forum marketing strategy. This is when you're wanting to build up a business, using forums, which will last for many years. This can be an excellent way to making money over an extended period of time without making an upfront investment. After all, forum marketing is totally free. With this style of marketing, you need to be slowly building up a forum presence and reputation. I'd seriously suggest that you don't do anything commercial until you've been a member of the forum for at least six months, three if you are particularly short of time. Just build yourself up as a provider of quality information. In this manner, your name is getting known so that when you do start to market, people will recognise you as an authority. That means they'll buy from you. So use long term forum marketing if you are not concerned about immediate cash.
Short term forum marketing is pretty much the opposite of this. In this case, you are looking to pull cash from the forum immediately, without worrying about a long term presence, or if you will even be active in the forum for anything more than a few weeks. You might even be willing to risk being banned, or to lose any posts that you have built up. In this case, you need to integrate yourself with the forum immediately and to start marketing to it. Put some links to your products up quickly, in your profile or in your signature. And try and draw attention to these. You may make some enemies, but if you're strategic, you might also make a few sales.
I personally would highly recommend a longer term strategy when marketing in online forums. This just makes business sense to me. You might also consider a compromise of mid term forum marketing. This is where you generally build up your reputation slowly, but provide a little information about your business early on. This is more subtle. But, generally the slower you take things, the more profitable your forum marketing will be over the full extent of your marketing career.
