Is All This Talk About Traffic Generation Through Social Bookmarking All Hype?

There is a lot of talk about social bookmarking and traffic generation. How much of it is hype - just more BS to ease dollars out of our pockets for no or low return?

Let me tell you a little story - yes, another one of those "How I did well with Internet marketing!" but there is a twist - although my story involves bookmarking, I'm NOT making any money from it yet!

Short story is that I had heard a lot about social bookmarking and I bought a website. It's generating better than 100 sign-ups per day and I now have over 5000 people who have opted in. What is a backlink? If you look backlink up in Wikipedia you'll find a backlink is any link received by a web node (web page, directory, website, etc) from another web node. Basically, provided you have plenty of backlinks and they are legitimate and link two websites with common or relevant information, you will be highly considered by the search engines.

Social bookmarking sites by their very nature are a source of very wide subject matter. Therefore the links from such a site are considered legitimate and acceptable by the search engines.

If you are active at social bookmarking sites you should achieve good levels of backlinks.

So, what is Social Bookmarking?

Why is it so powerful and different from other types of web promotion?

Social bookmarking websites are basically sites that categorize and store 'bookmarks' - think of them as posts. A bookmark is a posting - the information you put on the site. In your bookmark you tell something about yourself and include a link back to a specific website. You should specify keywords or tags to help categorize your bookmark within the social bookmarking site.

Millions of visitors come to these sites to search for information based on a keyword or tag search. They find your bookmark and click on your website link. Additionally they can actually vote for your bookmark as well which helps to give it further exposure.

You generate traffic by the people going to your website via the link. And, you can even join or start a group on a specific subject to help strengthen your position.

So what are the benefits?

You'll get a better PageRank
The aim is to get a better PageRank or PR for your site. PageRank is a value reflecting how important the search engines think a page is on the web. For example, Google takes the view that when one page links to another page it is like casting a vote for that page. The more votes the more important the page must be. Because social bookmarking sites have a high PageRank, the fact they are linked to your site improves your site's PR.

You'll get targeted traffic
Anyone going to a social bookmarking and searching for a keyword or tag is highly targeted. When they read your bookmark and click on your link they are highly targeted. So, provided your website is true to your keyword, you should achieve the desired synergies.

You'll get faster Search Engine Indexing
Social bookmarking sites are highly regarded by search engines because of their disparate but focussed content and tag search functionality. So they are visited regularly by search engines. Any links will be found very quickly.

You'll achieve higher Search Engine Ranking
Getting one-way incoming links is a key factor in higher search engine ranking. You get virtually unlimited keyword links to your site - it is limited only by the size of the bookmarking site and the number of tags it has. Having more keyword links that are relevant to your site will result in higher ranking.
