Irritable Bowel Syndrome Pain and Treatment

A common symptom for individuals who have the condition known as irritable bowel syndrome is the abdominal pain that is moderate to severe in some individuals. This pain can be very distressing and disruptive to the person's life causing them to miss school, work and social events and significantly interfere with their overall quality of life.

Fortunately, if you are one of the millions of individuals who suffer from IBS, there are treatments that can alleviate the extreme pain caused by this symptom of IBS that typically include a combination of medication and changes in diet. However, due to the fact that the symptoms and triggers of IBS vary greatly among individuals, it may take several attempts while working closely with your physician to find the one that is right for you.

Locating the Source of the Pain with IBS

The pain that individuals with IBS experience comes from the muscle contractions in the intestinal tract. These muscles are located throughout the colon and contract in such as manner as to move the stool along the length of the intestines and out of the body.

In individuals with IBS, these muscle contractions may at times occur irregularly and sporadically contracting throughout the intestinal tract which causes this mild to severe abdominal pain. This pain primarily occurs in most individuals after they have eaten and can last for several hours. Knowing what foods trigger these symptoms is the most beneficial in controlling this painful symptom of IBS.

Prescription Medications used to treat the Painful Symptoms of IBS

In order to treat the moderate to severe pain that some individuals experience on a regular basis with IBS, a physician may prescribe antispasmodic medication that relaxes the stomach and intestinal muscles providing relief from the abdominal pain.

Antispasmodic medications that may be prescribed include "Donnatal" which is a combination of "belladonna" and "Phenobarbital", "Bentyl" or "dicyclomine", and "Levsin" or "hyoscyamine".

These medications are typically prescribed to be taken thirty to sixty minutes prior to eating; however, side effects can occur with these medications that include decreased sweating, constipation, urinary problems, headache, nausea, blurred vision, and dizziness.

Tricyclic antidepressants are also sometimes prescribed for patients with IBS and can help to control the abdominal pain. Tricyclic antidepressants include "amitriptyline" or "Elavil", "Tofranil" or "imipramine" and "Aventyl" or "nortriptyline".

However, these antidepressants are typically prescribed in a much lower dosag than is typically given to those who suffer from depression and can take several weeks before an individual experiences relief from abdominal pain. These antidepressants can also help to relieve the symptom of diarrhea and are usually more effective for most patients when taken at night.

Other Methods of Relieving the Abdominal Pain Associated with IBS

Many individuals have also found relief from abdominal pain when taking peppermint in the form of enteric-coated capsules. Peppermint is an antispasmodic that is capable of calming the muscle spasms associated with irritable bowel syndrome.

Heat therapy has also been effective in the relief of abdominal pain and can be done with use of a heating pad, sauna, steam bath, or Jacuzzi. Some individuals also find yoga, meditation or relaxation techniques help with their symptoms of IBS.
