Internet Marketing & SEO - How to Find Keywords For a Website

Expert Author John T Jones, Ph.D.

This article is about how to find keywords for a website but it is more than that. We need to answer a few questions first. What is the function of a website? How do people find a website? How do we satisfy the search engines and spiders that snoop around the Internet and decide which websites to boost and which websites to put the plaque on. Why are keywords important? Finally, how to find keywords for a website?

What is the function of a website?

The cold war brought on the expansion of defense spending and the need for a system to share information. That is what started the Internet. No, it was not Al Gore. From its original purpose in expanded to everybody. Everybody but Ingrid Helsinki in Kurdistan has access to the internet. The Internet is the largest source of information and misinformation in the world. It has a major purpose, even though constantly abused, which is to share information. The porn industry gave the hardware needed for everyone to look at their smut. We all use that hardware daily.

How do people find a website?

People are always looking for something. How do I grow very large pumpkins? (Move to Alaska?) When can I collect my Social Security and how much will I get? Who was the king of France in 1380? Was Attila the Hun really that mean? Who was Rasputin? What is the size of the Universe? Can we see all of it through Hubble? Place any of these question in the address box or the search bar of your browser and you will get your answers. Yes, the address bar works just about the same as the search box. Try it if you don't believe me.

The point is that people find websites by looking for RELEVANT INFORMATION on their question. If a website comes up in your search and does not answer your question, how long will you stay there? Well, you won't even go there!

How do we satisfy the search engines and spiders that snoop around the Internet and decide which websites to boost and which websites to put the plaque on.

The question is answered in the last question. ONLY those sites are favored that have RELEVANT INFORMATION. If you want to have a successful web site, have each page answer a question that Internet patrons are looking for.

Why are keywords important?

Keywords are important because people search using keywords. They don't know they are keywords but the people who gather such data count how often a word is used and tabulate the information. You can learn how often a keyword or keyword phrase is used by doing a search on the keyword. If you put a keyword in quotation marks in the search bar, you will bring up all the sites that use that keyword and have content on it. When you bring up over 5000 sites with a keyword in quotes, it is very competitive. It could be hard to make a sell with that keyword if you are an Internet marketer. When you are trying to improve SEO or Search Engine Optimization, place your keyword or keyword phrase in the page title, the first paragraph, the last paragraph and a few places in between. Using heading makes a difference to the search engines (depending on which day of the week they are looking at your page. They have what is called a algorithm and they change it like we change our bath water.

Finally, how to find keywords for a website?

So keywords are very important and I know you are looking for how to find keywords for a website? Most all professionals go to the Google AdWords Keyword Tool External. I don't know any that do not use this tool. To go there simply place those words in the address or search box on your browser and it will come up Number 1. Study the page and the information that goes with it. If you want to bring up the number of competitive sites just place the keyword an quotation marks and search again. The search tool at Wealthy Affiliate brings up this information with one click but you must be a member.

WordTracker is a great organization for analyzing and finding keywords. They have a free trial but there regular services are economical. Micronichefinder is software program which I use at times that helps find keywords. There are many other such tools on the Internet but all you really need is Google's AdWords Keyword Tool External.

I hope this helps answer the question, How to find keywords for a website.
