This may very well be one of the most important articles you're going to read this year. It clearly explains how you can give away something for free and still get people to pay for a paid version if the product you're selling is good enough. In order to illustrate this, I am going to tell of a personal experience that I have had as a consumer. Yes, a consumer. This will be a valuable lesson to you as well.
I make no secret about the fact that I am an avid gamer. I have been playing RPGs since I was a teenager, starting with the original D&D paper, pen and dice. Well, back in July of this year, I got into an online game called Sorcery Quest. It's free to play. So, being the cheap person that I am, I decided to give it a shot. It became very addicting. Except I discovered two things about the game that I personally didn't like.
First, there's the fact that you only get so many turns per day and turns only regenerate at one per every two hours of real time. So, if you use up all your turns the previous day, waiting a 24 hour period will give you an additional 12 turns. Now, that may seem like a lot, but let me tell you...it's not. An average turn takes about 3-5 minutes. So you can slam through 12 turns in 30 to 60 minutes...or less. Doesn't give you much playing time during the day UNLESS you purchase additional turns with tokens. Tokens can be bought via PayPal.
The other thing I don't like is that most of the REALLY great items that you find in treasure chests are ones that require you to use tokens to take. You only get 100 tokens to begin with. And trust me, they go fast.
Well, I stuck to my guns. I said heck if I'm going to pay money to get these things...until I came across one item that I just had to have. It was going to make my one character a lot more powerful. I finally couldn't take it anymore and caved in and purchased 1000 tokens. They cost me $9.95. I had become, in spite of my digging in my heels, a paying customer. Granted, I am going to use those tokens ONLY on things I have to have, but I still ended up as a paying customer.
Had the game not been so great to begin with, I might not have.
Point is, if you have a great product that is free or very inexpensive and people love it, you CAN get them to shell out money on enhancements. The key is having a strong foundation to begin with.
Looking at Sorcery Quest and some of the players, I can tell that many of them have spent a lot of money on this game. And why not? It's a great game and the things you're spending money on are, for the most part, worth it.
You can certainly learn a lesson from the folks who put together this great game.
They sure know how to market.
