If you think that you're the only one who gets lost when it comes to Internet marketing, trust me...you're not alone. Today, I got about as lost as one could get...and I've been marketing online for over seven years now. I'm going to tell you a personal story and then I'm going to tell you how to get through things like this without pulling your hair out of your head. I think you will find this interesting reading.
Today, I decided that I wanted to join a specific affiliate program that somebody referred me to. I thought it would be a good addition to the things that I was already doing. So the first thing I did was look up the name of the company at Google in order to get the correct URL. Well, I found it. I then went to the bottom of the page (where this stuff is usually found) to look for their "join our affiliate program" link. There was none. I looked all over the page, which had a massive amount of info on it, but couldn't find it.
Finally, I looked for a link that said "help" and clicked on it. That link took me to a page with a zillion things on it. I had to go through each topic and sub topic before I finally found a link that said, "join our affiliate program." Well, I figured that this was it. I was finally on my way home. Not even close.
The link took me to this page where I filled out tons of information. Never in my life did I have to fill out so much information for an affiliate program. I guess these guys must be really picky about who they let into their program. And that's fine with me. Anyway, after I finished filling everything out and clicked "apply" I was taken to a page that said to check my email.
Well, I checked my email and was presented with more links. One was to fill out my affiliate information as to how I wanted to be paid and so on. But then I noticed something. The name of the site where my affiliate info was being stored was different from the site I applied to. Okay, I figured this out pretty quick. The affiliate program was actually being run through a third party representing the site I was applying to. So I filled in all that info.
Then, I finally went to get my affiliate links only to be greeted by the following note on each one..."Pending Approval." To make a long story short, the original site I applied to STILL had to manually approve me. So even though I was a registered affiliate through the third party (a site that represents many affiliate programs) there was a chance that I could be rejected by the site I actually applied to.
Naturally, none of this, including all the disclaimers that you have to read and agree to, are explained to you up front. Otherwise, nobody would apply to these programs. If I got lost, I can only imagine somebody doing this for the first time.
So, how do we handle things like this? Just like I did...one step at a time. Don't panic. Take a deep breath and just follow each instruction as it's thrown at you. Yes, it becomes tedious after a while, but if you take it one step at a time, you WILL get through it.
Yes, even we experienced folks get lost sometimes.
