Are you looking for a change of vocation? Are you
unhappy with your current job? Perhaps plumbing is
for you. With the huge influx of people going from
school straight to universities there is a labour
gap for good reliable plumbers. Many plumbers can
now earn £80 pounds an hour and up to £100,000
pounds a year. Changing jobs into this much needed
profession can create personal satisfaction and
financial rewards. This article hopes to show the
easiest transition into to doing so.
Shop around
There are thousands of different courses for
becoming a plumber and they are all over the
place. Consequently looking for the right one
is essential and there are many ways of doing
this. Probably the best place to start is
looking at the internet; this will give you
information quickly and efficiently and also
give you estimates on cost. Also looking at
the yellow pages for these local courses is
effective, and make sure that you get in touch
with the city and guilds office which will
give out impartial information. However, the
best think to do is call up a plumber and ask
he or she how they got into the industry and
what courses they took, how much they cost and
whether it was worthwhile. After doing your
research then you can decide on the best course
of action.
What skills do I need to become a plumber?
Plumbing is skilled labour, therefore a
decent level of fitness is essential,
carrying pipes and bathroom fittings all
day can be difficult but if you have good
stamina this should not be a problem. A
good attitude is needed, being able to work
on your own or within a team are both
integral to plumbing and having a good
head on your shoulders makes these
processes easy to deal with. Finally having
a practical mind is vital, as this is a
practical profession being able to look at
things and know the way that they work is
imperative, if you are able to fix up a shed,
build a tree house or change the plugs on
your car then you should de able to fit in
with this type of work.
Qualifications
It is possible to get on the job training; this is a
very good way of becoming a good plumber in time
hopefully you can build up a reputation and get a lot
of business. However I would recommend getting your
NVQ2 after achieving this and getting two years experience
you will be a qualified plumber, this covers a variety of
things including sanitation, drainage and water. This can
take two years, however you can do night courses at
local colleges to make it easier. Also many self employed
plumbers have an NVQ3 which covers extras such as gas
and system design. The more qualifications the more
work the more work the
more money.
Hints
Becoming a plumber is not easy and the job
is certainly challenging but with rewards,
when starting in the profession I advise
that you do it part time while keeping your
previous job, in time you can go full time
however to start with this is certainly
sensible as it gives you back up.
