Progression is one of the most important parts of any bodybuilding program, but what exactly does this mean?
Simply put, progression means that you need to challenge yourself to improve every workout in order to grow muscle. To be able to do this successfully you need to make sure you record your progression at each workout in your own training diary, otherwise how will you know whether you are making gains to build muscles?
Building muscle is a science so it helps to get the right advice regarding your bodybuilding workouts, particularly if you are just starting out. Correct form is essential before you start to increase your program.
How can I use Progression?
One of the most common mistakes beginners (or even for that matter, experienced bodybuilders) make is repeating the same workout for months at a time, without changing any of the parts of it such as reps, set, weight etc. 'Adaption Response' is the term used to describe what happens to your body in this instance. In simple terms, your body gets used to doing the same routine and 'adapts' to the requirements to perform the exercises. The result is that your body stays the same shape and size without noticeable improvements.
Increase the Weight
This is one way of using progression to build muscles. If the weight you are using on a particular exercise becomes too easy (ie you can get all the reps out easily in the set), then you need to increase the weight. Be sure that your form is correct before you progress.
Change the Sets/Reps
If you always do the same amount of sets and reps in your workout your body will not be so responsive. Try changing the combination of sets and reps next workout; if you've been doing the same routine for a while, believe me, it will be a challenge! Try introducing supersets, dropsets, or split sets each month.
There are many different combinations of muscle building workouts, just make sure you change your routines often enough to be able to see growth. Remember, don't workout to maintain, workout to improve!
