If you are anything like me and you work pretty much non-stop six or seven days out of the week with hardly a moment to yourself, then vacations can seem not only deserved but expected. However, if you are part of the millions of Americans who work multiple jobs just to make ends meet or who work from home, then vacations can seem more like a dream than an actual possibility.
There are plenty of people with good intentions who set aside time for themselves to have a vacation. However, when you run a business or if you work from home, then this can be difficult, especially if you bring your laptop computer with you or are staying at a facility where the wifi is plentiful. That being said, sometimes we need to force ourselves to take time off no matter how much it bothers us. I was once told by someone that even if you have to pencil it into your schedule to take time for yourself, then that is what you may sometimes have to do.
It may seem silly to have to schedule time for yourself into your Blackberry or personal calendar, but it is true! So much more harm is done than we care to realize when we don't set boundaries for ourselves and our work. If you think about it, the reason that most people work isn't because they actually enjoy what it is that they are doing. Rather, the reason that the vast majority of us work is so that we can eat and actually have a life. Having a life means being able to travel, being able to purchase a house or condo, being able to buy a car...
If all you do is work, then when do you get a chance to actually enjoy the benefits of all of your hard labor? This is something to keep in mind when choosing a career for yourself. It is also the reason why many people in promising financial positions will often settle for a lesser paying job- because family and quality of life (not to mention personal sanity) is more important to them than a paycheck.
