Instant Hypnosis - Does it Happen in Real Life Or is it Just a Stage Trick?

Expert Author Trevor Johnson

You've probably seen those stage hypnosis shows where the hypnotist just has to utter the word "sleep" and his victims instantly go into a deep hypnotic trance. So, is this form of instant hypnosis reserved for television shows or can it happen in real life?

The thing about stage and television shows is that the subjects are carefully chosen. For a start, they volunteer to take part. After that, the hypnotist will check them to see which are most susceptible to being hypnotized. Near enough anyone can be hypnotized but some of us are much easier prey than others. So the first part of any stage or TV show is to whittle the volunteers down to those who are most likely to react.

So, in some ways, television and stage hypnosis shows are if not fake then at not totally real-life either. But that's show business.

If you attend a personal hypnosis session, it's unlikely that the hypnotist will use any form of instant hypnotic induction. Not because it wouldn't work. Just because there's more time available to put you into a hypnotic trance in a one hour hypnosis appointment than there is when you're running a stage show in front of an impatient audience who want to see other people make fools of themselves.

Just because it's not the preferred way to start a personal hypnosis session doesn't mean it wouldn't work. And you'd likely go just as deep with an instant hypnosis induction as you would with a longer trance induction. But a longer, more measured, approach will work with almost anyone, whereas the instant hypnosis option stands a chance of not working. It's horses for courses really.
