Installing Bathroom Vanities - What to Know About Adding a Bathroom Vanity

Adding a vanity to your bathroom adds more storage space and gives it a brand new look. Bathroom vanities come in a few varieties to meet your design needs, including classic wood styles and contemporary glass and metal. Regardless of what style of vanity you choose, installation is the same. Essentially, bathroom vanities are sinks with a large cabinet surrounding and, as a result, the installation for one of these fixtures is much like that for a sink. Installing and attaching any pipes or connectors is needed for both, but, when dealing with the actual vanity cabinets, the plumbing goes through them to the sink fixture on top.

When installing a bathroom vanity in place of a sink, the first thing to do is remove the old plumbing. This includes turning off the water that goes to the sink, which is done by rotating the shutoff valve handles below the hot and cold faucets. After, turn on the faucets just to release any pressurized water. Then, the next step is to detach the hot water line, which can be done with an adjustable wrench. The same should be done to the cold water line after.

The final step for taking out the old sink plumbing is removing the hot water line. This can be done by unscrewing the bolt that connects the water line to the shut off valve. As water may escape during this procedure, it's recommended that you place a bucket under the drain pipe before you unscrew the pipe. At this point, the plumbing for the old sink has been removed, and the plumbing for the new sink can be added.

One of the more difficult aspects of adding a bathroom vanity to your space is the plumbing. Generally, the plumbing goes through the bathroom vanity cabinet and into the sink, which sits on top of the bathroom cabinet. Although somewhat cumbersome to install, the result and practicality of a bathroom vanity is rewarding. As any dealer of bathroom vanities has several styles, you can choose from single sink and double sink designs for your bathroom.
