Information on the Canon SD90IS

One of the latest Canon point-and-shoot cameras is the Canon SD90IS. It's a great point-and-shoot camera for both serious amateurs and professionals looking for a small camera. Some of its features include: large resolution, large LCD display and high ISO capabilities, as well as a fast lens.

The camera features ten megapixels, which is equivalent to recently passed DSLRs and its LCD screen is 3.0 across. 10 megapixels means the photographer can make prints that are slightly larger than 8x10 with a 300 pixels per inch resolution, typical of high-quality photographs. The LCD screen is also equivalent in size to DLSR cameras, and is a good size for showing off recent photos and reviewing them. It's also large enough to see what's being photographed well and makes it easier to hold the camera at a number of unique angles.

It uses a rechargeable lithium battery, and comes with a charger. It does only come with one though, so buying a second one is a must for most people. The cost of one extra rechargeable battery is far less than multiple regular batteries though, and it's far more convenient to carry two slim batteries instead of multiple regular ones.

With a 3.8x wide angle optical zoom and image stabilization, this camera is great for shooting in low-light situations as well as just about any other typical shooting situation. The 3.8x zoom is equivalent to a 28 - 105mm lens and is a good basic zoom lens.

The maximum ISO of 12,800 with an aperture of as low as 2.0 in this camera are both great for shooting in low-light situations, and for shooting moving subjects. ISO in digital cameras is the same as ISO in film cameras. What this means is that the higher the ISO, the faster the camera can shoot and still be in focus. An aperture of 2.0 allows the lens to open wider letting in more light and allowing for a shallow depth of field. A shallow depth of field allows the background to blur, drawing attention to the subject, which is especially good for portraits.

This camera allows the user to shoot in either JPEG or RAW format. JPEG is normal, and will work for most amateur photographers that simply wish to do simple editing and processing. For the more serious photographer that wishes to do more editing and processing, the RAW format will probably be preferred as it does not compress the images and allows a greater range control and range in editing.

This camera comes with all the basics as other Canons do, including: one battery and charger, neck strap, Digital Camera Solution CD-ROM, USB cord and A/V cord. Basically everything the photographer needs to start out, shooting, uploading and sharing images.

The Canon SD90IS will suit the needs of most serious amateur photographers and those professionals that are looking for a small point-and-shoot when they don't need a DSLR to do the job. It may not fit every budget as it has a roughly $430 pricetag, but it's features such as it's high resolution, fast lens and RAW format capability fit the price.
