Recent studies show that nearly 300,000 women in the US get breast implants each year. Breast implants will increase the size of your breasts while also making them firmer and appear more lifted. The reasons woman report going through breasts augmentation surgery is to create bigger breasts, correct the shape or symmetry of their breasts, or to have their breasts reconstructed following a mastectomy. Breast implants can also improve the contour of your body, making you more shapely looking.

There are currently two types of implants available. Silicone implants and Saline Implants. Each type comes with its own risks. Saline implants got a bad reputation a few years back for leaking and causing serious health problems. Although Silicone implants may also leak, the health risks are less drastic. Silicone implants have a more natural feel to them, while saline implants create a more perky look.

Implants come in two shapes: round and teardrop shaped. Although it is up to the patient, surgeons tend to prefer the round shaped implants, due to the fact they seem to hold their shape better than the teardrop implants. Breasts implants need to be replaced every ten years to avoid the risk of them deteriorating in the body.

With any surgery it is important to understand the risks involved. For example, rejection of the implants or infection can happen after the surgery. The incisions may cause visible scarring. Scar tissue may form beneath the incisions. Most women reported a decrease in feeling or sensation in the breasts and nipples, and almost half of women reported an inability to breastfeed.

During a breast implant surgery, incisions are made under the breast, near the armpit, and around the nipple. The doctor than creates a pocket beneath the chest muscle and natural breast tissue. The implant is inserted, and if needed the nipple is repositioned to look natural.
