So you've decided to create an information product or learning content product. Good for you. But now you've got a problem. You don't know where to start.
In this article I'm going to give you the first steps to creating a new product.
New product lines should always begin with developing a niche strategy. What is a niche strategy? Basically it consists of three tasks.
The first task is to identify your target audience. By identifying your target audience you are in fact, identifying your niche. You are identifying who your customer will be, how to contact them and other important information about them. This target customer will help to focus your efforts in all the rest of the product creation process.
The second task should come right out of this identification. It is the identification of an immediate problem and the motivation behind that problem. This will also help to focus your efforts.
The third task is the development of your solution. Identifying your customer's problem is mandatory but it isn't the problem that is going to be sold. What's going to be sold is your ability to solve that problem. Your system is what people will buy and pay a premium to read.
Once you have identified who you are going to sell to and developed a solution that you can sell to them you are ready to go on to developing a product strategy.
Your product strategy basically consists of identifying the products you are going to sell, why you are going to sell the product, the price, their format and how you are going to market them. All of these products will be variations on the same solution that you are selling. What you are creating in this strategy is your sales funnel.
What is a sales funnel?
At it's simplest it is the map of how your products work together to funnel your customers into purchasing your most profitable product.
At this point you have identified your customers, identified the solution you are going to sell, and identified the products you are going to use to sell the solution.
Now you need to develop each of the products.
That process begins with designing your product. When you identified the product strategy you will have identified what type of products you need. The details of the individual product still need to be described. Basically you need to plan and describe each product you are going to design. And to make the actual creation most efficient you need to do so at a detailed level. When designing eBooks or printed books this means at the paragraph level. For other media you will need to design to an equivalent level.
