Golfing is exercise. Like all athletes, golfers need to do the right things before, during and after their golf game to avoid injury and maximize results. Unfortunately most golfers don't realize this. To be a great golfer you need to have a pre and post game plan to keep limber and maximize results.
Step 1: Slow Starters Finish Strong
There is no need to rush out on the golf course. If you have a half day to play a round of golf, take the time you need to prepare for it physically. 15 minutes is more than sufficient to complete these drills. The results will show in your golf game and really won't make you late for tee time.
Step 2: Get the Body Moving
Before you begin to stretch your golfing muscles it is important to elevate your heart rate. This increases blood flow which will allow a golfer to maximize stretches and minimize injury. A brisk walk from your vehicle to the golf club house or to the first fairway is all it should take to get your blood flowing.
Step 3: Head and Shoulders First
Most stretching routines work top to bottom or vice versa. Golf stretching is no different. Start with slow half rotations on the neck and then move to the shoulders and arms. Golfers should also stretch their torso by smooth rotations of the hip from side to side. Each drill should take at least 30 seconds.
Step 4: The Back is the Key
Though golfers may not feel it during a round of golf, the back muscles get well used. Stretch you back in two ways. First, clasp you hands behind you and push out and up until your back tightens. Second, stretch you arms as high above you head and clasp again. Both should be held for 30 seconds.
Note: Golfers may want to repeat this drill several times. This is also great if you find that your back begins to stiffen during the round of golf as well. Simply take a minute or two and repeat these stretches. Your back and your golf game will thank you.
Step 5: Post Game Repeat
This is a vital part of any golfer's routine. In fact, a lot of golfers spend more time cooling down than they do warming up. After a round of golf your body has been through a lot of exercise. Stretching diminishes soreness and increases the muscle's ability to repair.
