I went to see Inception last night and it has been on my mind since. I just wanted to share a few of the numerous thoughts I've had:
it really hit home after I watched the movie how it can actually really be applied to every day life. We don't actually need to get into people's dreams to influence them and afftect them. In fact, we do get into people's minds all the time... Especially kids'.
Planting an idea into a kid's brain is very easy, especially if you are an authority figure, such as a parent or a teacher. And it is a very fine line between an idea that they will easily dismiss or one that will remain there forever and affect them... in a positive or negative way.
Once ideas become beliefs, they are very difficult to shake. And once they have become convictions, it is even harder. The key is to make sure that the convictions your kids build will help them.
Simple statements like "you can do it" can go a very long way. "Don't even try this, you'll fail" can also impact them. Now, depending on the context, we might think that it can be a good thing or a bad thing. If kids are too sure that they "can do it", they might get physically hurt. But when it comes to being persistent in a project, it will help them.
Anybody who's ever succeeded in anything got there because they never gave up and knew they could do it. How did they know it? Because that concept was planted in their minds.
So the real question remains: Do my kids succeed because I tell them they can do it? In other words, can I encourage them enough that they believe strongly enough that they can do it, which will trigger certain actions that will get them to their goals?
Or do they succeed because they thoroughly choose the areas where they think they can succeed in according to already acquired results?
What is reality? What you see in your mind or what you see around you?
