According to Brian Halligan and Dharmesh Shah ("Inbound Marketing", 2010) getting inbound links is the most effective way to achieve better ranking by Google...and if it works for Google, well...
TERM: Inbound link- a "link" on another web page that points to your page.
TERM: Ranking- a measurement of your web site or blog's effectiveness in drawing traffic to your site.
Do you want a SEISMIC shift in your ranking with the search engines? Then you want highly ranked sites attracted to your site, and finally, highly ranked sites linked to your site. This will cause the game changing transfer of value to your web page or blog.
Here is a summary of the issues that affect link value:
· The value(ranking/authority) a search engine assigns to the page the link belongs. The more important the page is to the search engine, the more value it can pass on to your web page· The number of other links on the page linking to you. The more links radiating from that page, the less value or SEO credit these links will pass on to you.
· The anchor text (by default, seen as underlined words that are clickable) of the link that has your keywords in the text, is of the highest value to you in terms of ranking with the search engine.
· Is the link a "no follow" or a "do follow" link.
The last issue needs some discussion. In most sites' comment space, visitors are allowed to comment, then leave a URL that links back to their blog or web site of their choice. If the page being linked to has a "no follow" attribute (these days, that includes most web pages and blogs), then there is no value passed on to the one commenting or creating content on another's web site with the single intent of gaining SEO merit.
Getting highly valued inbound links to your web site or blog must become a leading marketing strategy to achieve significant search engine ranking and ultimately the traffic of your dreams! What is a newbie nobody to do? There are some very solid strategies that are a solution to this conundrum. But that is another article.
