Improving Google Search Engine Ranking

Expert Author Maurice Savaryego

You have a website, or maybe you have written an article to boost your website. In both cases what you want is for your website or article to be placed on the first page of Google search engine ranking for searches using your targeted keyword. You may wonder why we are specifically focusing on Google while other search engines such as Yahoo and Bing exist. The simple answer is that Google gets the large majority of all the search traffic, and if you achieve a good Google search engine ranking, you will already be in business!

The following lists some of the steps you should take to improve your Google search engine ranking for articles and websites:

Providing More Back Links to Your Website

Multiply the links to your website from websites recognized by Google as authority sites. The importance of a site is decided among other things by its Google page rank, the amount of back links it has, and the weight of the sites where the back links originate. Note that the page rank of any site can be retrieved from the Google toolbar which should be downloaded and installed on your browser.
Back links to your site can be generated in a number of ways:

• You can request the owner of an authority site to add your link by offering to place theirs into your site.
• You can insert the link to your website into an article that you submit to a popular article directory.
• By paying a relatively small fee, you can use the services of article propagation companies who will generate multiple unique versions of your article and submit them to a multitude of sites.
• You can append your website or article link to contributions you make to well known web forums, to comments you submit in high gravity blogs, and you can also add your URL to social bookmarking websites.

In addition, note that for articles, if you add them to high gravity article directories which are considered by Google as authority sites, they will surely get a pretty good Google search engine ranking to start with which you can further enhance by following the instructions given below.

Choose Optimized Keyword

Do your homework before selecting the keyword for your chosen niche to be used in your website or article. There are mainly two parameters you have to check before you decide on your keyword. Parameter one is competition. To find out about keyword competition perform a Google search with keyword in quotes. As a rule, the keyword should be kept if the number of returned sites is below 5000. However, this does not mean that the keyword should be rejected if the number is higher than 5000. Just remember that the larger that number, the more you will have to optimize to realize a first page Google search engine ranking.

I also advise to analyse the HTML source code of the sites and articles that come out at the start of Google search engine results to see what their strategy in ranking so well is, and how you can mimic them. There are tools that can help determine the number of links to these first page sites or articles, and on other informative parameters.

The second parameter is the traffic (or number of searches) associated with your candidate keyword. If competition is low, but the keyword is under utilized, there is no point in choosing it. You should target reasonably high keyword traffic per month for your candidate keyword. The free Google Keyword Tool can be used to determine the number of searches per month for the candidate keyword. At the end of the day, the chosen keyword should represent a suitable compromise between the competition and traffic parameters.

Distribute Keyword to Website and Article Content

If possible, you should name your website and URL using the keyword. The keyword should also be used in the title, description, and meta tags of your site. Some say that today Google does not care any longer about meta tags for search engine ranking. It will not cause any damage if you add your keyword to the meta tags as long as you do not overdo it. Make sure the keyword also appears in the content of your home page as well as the other pages.

The same is true for articles. The keyword should be included in the title of your article, within the body, within the anchor text for your website link, as well as in the last paragraph of the article. However, again do not exaggerate. If keywords are used too often, it could be judged by Google as spamming, and your site or article could be ignored.

No one really knows exactly how the Google search engine ranking algorithm works. To maintain quality traffic Google frequently changes it to stay a few steps ahead of those who try to influence the search rankings by shady techniques. However, if you apply the above recommendations you will definitely observe an improvement in your Google search engine ranking.
