Improving Ferret Lifespan

Ferrets are domestic mammals that are gaining much popularity as pets in countries where it is legal to domesticate them. There are still some countries that do not permit the domestication of these animals. Ferrets are crepuscular, which means they need to sleep a lot, at least 14-18 hours in a day. They are most active around the hours of dusk and dawn. It is not easy to care of these pets because they're not like the usual domesticated animals such as cats and dogs.

These animals are meat lovers. Their metabolism requires lots of protein and fats. That's why feeding them with a diet that's high in fiber or carbohydrates are a no-no. Their system which is designed for carnivorous living cannot digest it. So for these pets, meat and fats are the way to go. They need to be properly hydrated that's why providing them always with drinking water is also a must.

Just like most carnivores, ferrets are predators in the wild. But by domesticating them, most owners do not and cannot let them be. Imagine a ferret killing, slaughtering and eating a mice; it's not a pretty sight. So the best alternative is to give them canned meat products. Good thing there are canned raw meat products in the market today which are biologically appropriate. These are ideal for carnivorous domesticated pets. Due to their diminutive size, it's wise to feed them often but in small quantities.

Naturally, ferrets are kept in cages as pets. But in the wild, they live in burrows. This means that they're used to running around freely. That's why it's important for owners to put them in a cage where there are lots of rooms to roam freely. This will give them a chance to exercise and thus, making them fitter and healthier.

Before owning one, be sure to look for a vet who has ample knowledge about ferrets. Having a trusted animal doctor is vital because these pets are susceptible to various diseases such as cancer of the adrenal glands and lymph nodes, pancreas problems, hairball and dental issues.

The normal life expectancy of ferrets is 7 years but with appropriate care, diet, exercise and medical aid, it's highly likely that these animals would live longer.
