Improve Home Security, Stop Break-Ins in the Basement

When beginning to think about home security most people forget to not only focus on the home, but the parts of the house above, below, and around where they eat, sleep, live and play. The weakest spots for security, and therefore the best points of entry for a burglar are often these zones in the form of the attic, basement or garage. Basements are a place that are often considered dark, and scary, and not always a part of the house we like to think about. However, it is important to remember that even if you are not thinking about or using your basement, that doesn't mean that a thief won't. For those with finished basements that are fully in use, basement safety is equally as important, although hopefully these homes already think of the basement as an extension of the house. The basement leads to the rest of the house, and any way in is good enough for someone who really wishes to gain entry. Try some of the following tips to boost basement safety.

Windows. With the basement it's extremely important to pay attention to the windows that are installed. Often older basement windows are thin and flimsy. Not to mention, that as a basement window these points of entry, or exit, are inherently close to the ground. Although it is more appealing to begin with home repairs above ground where the family is mainly located, don't forget to focus some effort here as well. When shopping for windows try for tempered, laminated, or wired glass. Not only are they strong enough to take the occasional stray rock thrown by the leaf-blower or soccer ball, they will improve home security since a burglar will not be able to break them to gain entry. Make sure the windows lock from the inside, but in such a manner that family members could still get out in the event of an emergency. Look for windows with sturdy frames so that locks cannot be easily kicked in. Another option is to add bars to the outside of the window, or to add a burglar window bar to the inside that keeps the window from being slid open.

Alarm System. A common mistake is to put window alarms only on windows leading to the actual living part of the house. Even the best home alarm system can only advise the homeowner of break-ins if it is set up to monitor the area where the break-in occurs. Many alarm systems have intruder alarm for basement applications, sounding an alarm when the window is broken or opened. Remember to place the stickers saying your windows are monitored on the basement windows too, not just those on the first floor. Someone concentrating on the lower windows may miss this warning sign and cause unnecessary damage to your home. Prevention is key, and simply letting a thief know about your alarm system is a highly effective preventative measure.

Add Natural Barriers. Although highly effective, bars on a window can be rather unsightly, so a great alternative is to plant uninviting flora in the areas around basement windows. Avoid at all costs large bushes and trees that can act as a shield for thieves and give them the cover they need to gain entry to your home. Instead, try planting thorny, prickly plants like cacti or rosebushes in the area around the window. It may just be enough of a hassle that standing in bed of thorns while trying to break your window locks just isn't worth it.

Whatever method you use to protect the basement of your home, keep in mind that the best way to protect all areas of a house is to get help from the experts like those at adt. Visit adt security system on the web to see the latest in home security systems.
