Identity theft has been increasing steadily as technology increases its capabilities. A family law attorney is aware of the many problems that can happen to you and has several tips that you should follow to keep you and your family members' identity safe. Even if you are leery of a family law lawyer, you will be very grateful to learn of the helpful suggestions provided to you in this article. Once you review these tips pass your knowledge onto those friends and family members that you care about so that they too will be safe from this highly increasing crime of identity theft.
Most Americans carry more than one credit card in their wallets. And the majority of those people, sign the back of the card with their signature as it states that you should. To prevent this problem, sign the back of all of your credit cards with Photo ID Required to ensure that the card may not be used without proper identification.
Another big problem that a lot of people do is to put too much crucial information listed on their checks. Put your work phone number on your checks and not your home number. If you have a PO Box number put that for the address on your checks and if you do not have a PO Box, then put your work address on it rather than your home address. Never ever put your social security number on your checks. If you are asked for your social security number, then you can provide it at that time. Also, when writing a check to pay a credit card bill do not include the entire credit card account number on the memo line. Instead, just put the last 4 digits of the card there as the credit card company knows the remainder of the card number.
Another great tip is to stay a step ahead and prepare for the possibility of having your purse or wallet stolen. Make photo copies of all of the important contents in your wallet on the front and the back. Then when your wallet is taken, you will know exactly what you had and all of the important account numbers and phone numbers that you will need in order to cancel the cards. Along with this information have the toll free numbers in a safe place so you can immediately call them as soon as you can. Then you should file a police report too of your stolen items. One tip that most of us do not know is that you should also contact the 3 national credit reporting organizations to put a fraud alert on your name. The social security fraud line also should be notified as it will alert any credit agencies that your information has been stolen and no new credit should be allowed to be opened.
It is better to be safe than sorry. Follow some of these tips to help prevent identity theft and to recover everything back in order if your identity is taken.
