An aspect much overlooked by many business owners who are in a constant grind is that there is no 401k plan for the owner of the business in most cases and if you do not start planning for your retirement now there could be problems down the line once you decide you have had a enough. In this article we look at the many plans that business owners have today to gain more financial security later in life and have supplemental income throughout their life just in case the business takes a hit or the economy takes a tumble.

The most common thing business owners do is take a certain amount of their monthly income and invest it into the stock market or some type of IRA. This is a better option than not investing at all but at the same time you are essentially putting all of your eggs in one basket which hurt many people during this latest economic downfall. If you are serious about having long-term wealth and financial security you need to diversify your investments in a way that has very conservative investments such as money-market accounts and CD's then mix in numerous stocks in different industries on the stock market and even purchase small amounts of foreign currency and gold to hedge against the inflation that is inevitable due to our high spending and quickly falling economy.

Investing conservatively may be a hard thing to do when you see many friends showing off their stocks they purchased but just remember that next time when the economy hits a downfall there stocks will be worthless and your conservative investments will not lose much value at all. Common sense, patience, and discipline are the keys to long-term investments to provide financial security.

So remember when making your investments you must buy solid companies on the stock market and not just flavor of the day stocks plus make solid investments into CD's, money-market, and even keep a few thousand in a high-yield savings account for emergency back-up sometime in the future. If you do all of this plus buy foreign currencies such as the euro, yen, and pound plus some gold and silver you should be set up for financial security once you are ready to hang it up from the business world.

Jason Z. Ledger writes about investing on his blog SmallBizInvest where he also covers many other people in finance such as Peter Schiff, Warren Buffett, Jeffrey Lemerond, Ben Graham, and more
