Immortalizing Fly Fishing in Print

The sport of fly-fishing has reached legendary status thanks to famous authors like Ernest Hemingway and Albert Bigelow Paine. Their books on fly fishing have inspired thousands of anglers to take up the sport and discover the same passion for it that the writer has. Fly Fishing has also inspired the full length motion picture like A River Runs Through It which was based on the writings of Norman Maclean. The film was an Academy Award winner and the book was nominated for the Pulitzer Prize.

Hemingway's book The Son Also Rises is known best for the association with the running of the bulls in Pamplona, Spain but before the main characters tackle that adventure they spend five days fishing. The tranquility and joy that they find fishing is a stark contrast to the nightlife and wild times that follow in Pamplona and leads to a great deal of conflict. Hemingway, an avid fisherman himself often would weave stories about fishing into his novels and took his character on one of the famous fishing trips of all time in The Old Man and the Sea.

Albert Bigelow Paine is another award winning author who has helped spread the joy of fishing. His novel, The Tent Dwellers, is about a trout fishing trip that he went on to Nova Scotia. Paine was the official biographer of Mark Twain and learned a great deal about writing by working with Twain. The Tent Dwellers was well received and has inspired thousands of others to make a similar trek into what is now the Tobeatic Wilderness Area.

The most famous story of all associated with fly fishing though is A River Runs Through It. The book and the subsequent movie tell the stories of two brothers whose lives are headed in completely opposite directions. The one thing they have in common is their love for fishing. The film won an Oscar for cinematography because of the beautiful scenery.
