If You're Pregnant, You CAN Get Relief From Morning Sickness With These Remedies

Expert Author Jennifer Schmidt

There are morning sickness remedies that go to the heart of the cause and attack. There are also some that only address the symptoms of morning sickness. Remedies that are natural will go to the cause and give you better relief than if you just address the symptom.

It's like taking an over-the-counter medication for a cold. You are just treating the symptoms and covering up the actual cause of the cold. This just pushes that cause further down into your body and you will end up feeling sick again soon because your body it trying to fix what's really wrong.

If morning sickness is, indeed, your body's way of protecting this little baby, then you want to deal with the root causes instead of just covering up the symptoms. The best way to do this is through natural remedies. From old wives' tales to well-researched options, you have lots of choices.

As I researched and experimented with different herbal options, I noticed so many women saying, "Oh, that herbal stuff didn't work for me! I tried it once and it didn't do anything!"

Please keep in mind that remedies for morning sickness work differently than what you get over-the-counter or from the doctor. It will take a little while for your body to grab on to your herb of choice and target it to the right place within.

I would say to give an herbal remedy at least one full week of use before making any judgments. Then, I would increase the dosage and use it for another week if nothing was happening. I know that seems like a long time to wait before finding relief, but just think about how much better the remedy is for your body and your baby than the synthetic stuff!

Let's explore some of those choices:

Herbal Teas

During when I experienced morning sickness with baby #5, I found that drinking a hot cup of tea with raw honey first thing in the morning helped me cope so much better. It didn't matter what kind of tea I took, anything did the trick for me.

If you can't stand to take it fresh from the cup, then you can try to freeze the tea and suck on ice cubes during the day or eat it crushed. Any herb that can be taken as a tea can also be found in capsules, though you have to take quite a few capsules to equal one cup of fresh brewed tea.

· Red raspberry

· Peppermint

· Wild yam

· Peach bark

· Ginger (see below)

· Clove (see below)

Raw Honey

There are so many benefits to taking a daily dose of raw honey, it's hard to list them all in one article. From boosting your immune system to providing you with extra energy, raw honey covers a wide range of issues. Use raw honey to sweeten your tea instead of sugar. For a snack, have some whole wheat toast with some raw honey and cinnamon.

Peppermint Oil

If you can't stand the taste of peppermint tea, try peppermint oil in water. You'll get the same health benefits without the full blast of tea. Later on in your pregnancy, you can take this remedy to help with heartburn as well! Some women find just the smell of peppermint helps them. To take advantage of this benefit, boil some water and put it in a cup with a few drops of the oil. Put the cup by your bedside to feel the effects all night long.

Ginger

I know you've heard this one a million times! But, in truth, it does work for many women. Finding some raw ginger at your local health food store or grocery store is the best way to take it. When you make a tea from the root, don't take a whole cup down at once - instead, sip on it over a period of time. Ginger does bring on uterine contractions in some women if you take too much at once.

One of the reasons ginger works to remedy morning sickness is because it helps to remove excess toxins from the body. If you don't want to drink it, take a ginger bath. Just brew that tea from fresh grated ginger root and pour it right in your bath tub, without bubble bath of course. Be careful that your bath water isn't too hot and come out slowly once you are done.

Clove tea

Combine with ginger and cinnamon for a fabulous tea! Clove - you know, the one in your spice rack - is an excellent choice because it soothes an upset stomach and aids in digestion. It also has been shown to boost the immune system.

Alfalfa

The name alfalfa means "Father of all Foods". This herb is so very rich in many vitamins and minerals - calcium, iron, phosphorus to name just a few. It has a good concentration of Vitamin K which has been shown to help peptic ulcers - the bacteria that causes peptic ulcers has also been linked to morning sickness. Alfalfa also has eight of the essential amino acids and the highest chlorophyll content of any plant.

Dandelion

This little weed that plagues many landscapers is actually a powerhouse of great things! It is very high in calcium along with other vitamins and minerals. It helps to cleanse the liver - which is working overtime while you are pregnant to regulate the extra hormone load. The blood benefits the most from dandelion. It purifies, builds, and balances the blood which gives you energy, endurance, and takes care of anemia.

"A severely anemic pregnant woman took 2 dandelion capsules 3 times a day. In less than a month her blood count came up several points. Her obstetrician stated he was pleasantly surprised because he hadn't seen it come up like that before, during a pregnancy." The How to Herb Book by Velma J. Keith

If you are suffering from morning sickness, your best course to follow will include these remedies - morning sickness doesn't have to take control of your life any more!
