Recreational vehicles these days can range all the way from various watercraft, all-terrain buggies, right up to wheeled units that have all the comforts of home. In fact they are a home away from home, equipped with a living room, bedroom, kitchen and bathroom. They also have plush cushioned seats, satellite TV, GPS, and sensitive communication equipment. Some are powered by alternate power sources like generators or solar panels.
The RV is ideal for pleasure trips, camping and general family occasions of a very unique and enjoyable nature. More and more people are renting or buying these vehicles because they are extremely cost effective since you are bringing your accommodation along with you. Traveling in this way becomes a special art with an ambiance and pleasure of its own. In fact, there is brotherhood of adventurers who roll down the highway, seeking adventure and making their home anywhere they choose to stop.
Not long ago a retired couple were traveling in their RV on a trip to Milwaukee Wisconsin. In case you are not familiar with Milwaukee, it is roughly two hours north of Chicago right on Lake Michigan. The secondary roads between Chicago and Wisconsin that run along the lake have their share of twists and turns. In a large RV on a winding road all it takes is a moment's inattention and you could find yourself involved in a serious accident.
And that's exactly what happened. The RV swerved ever so slightly and clipped a cyclist who was riding along the right edge of the pavement. The cyclist went down, and although he was not killed in the accident, he hit his head quite hard on the pavement and was never the same again.
Over the years, statistics have laid bare the fact that road accidents involving recreational vehicles are on the increase. Many are fatal and many others result in gruesome injuries and disabilities beyond description. One clear fact that has emerged is that more often than not, it is the older drivers of recreational vehicles who are involved in these accidents. A major reason for this is that these vehicles are bigger and less maneuverable, resulting from insufficient control by these inexperienced non professional drivers.
Age related poor eyesight could also contribute to this problem. It is a matter of regret that most states have no laws requiring special driving licenses for heavy and long vehicles and one can drive one of these units with the same license as a normal automobile. In many cases modifications are made to recreational vehicles for better comfort and aesthetics. These can result in imbalance and cause loss of control during difficult maneuvers on dangerous roads.
Imagine someone in a monstrosity of a recreational vehicle, driving with his eyes fixed steadfastly on the road in spite of creeping fatigue. Suddenly they lose concentration for just a moment, and hit you as you are walking or cycling on the pavement. Suddenly you black out, and the next thing you know is you are lying under the glare of lights in a hospital operating room. They tell you that your hip is badly broken and that you require surgery immediately.
This is exactly what happened to the cyclist on the winding road leading to Milwaukee. He ended up in the hospital that day, and was in and out of there for two or three years after that. In such a case the injured person not only suffers the pain of the injury, but must also pay a hefty price for medical treatment and may likely lose his or her job because of their condition. Fortunately for him he found a top notch Milwaukee personal injury lawyer who took his case and got a fair settlement from the RV driver's insurance company.
Not every case of personal injury requires a personal injury lawyer. It is only when an injury happens as a result of incompetence, carelessness or incompetence on the part of a third party.
If this happens to you the first thing you must do is contact a competent personal injury lawyer. If the circumstances indicate that the case is worth pursuing, many personal injury lawyers will proceed on a no win, no fee basis, which means that all costs involved in filing the claim, investigating the accident, negotiating a settlement and, if necessary, representing you in court - all of these things are of no consequence to you. The legal fees and costs are covered by the insurance company of the losing side.
Your attorney will also visit you personally to dispel your doubts and to reassure you that you are in strong and capable hands. Just find a reliable, trustworthy and experienced lawyer and then concentrate on getting better.
