If You Want to Lose Weight Permanently, Start by Asking Yourself This: Why Am I Overweight?

Expert Author Claire Carradice

It took me years to figure out what had driven me to food, and consequently, habitual overeating and weight gain for most of my life. My aim is to help make your journey a lot simpler, and faster than my own. If you are someone who only needs to lose a pound or two, this article is not for you! Unless of course, you have been continuously unable to lose said pound or two for a long period of time, no matter how much you have tried... This article however, is aimed at those who have battled with weight issues for a while already and desperately want to lose weight permanently.

For you, your weight issue hangs around your neck in a stranglehold, threatening to overwhelm you with despair.

You have tried many diets. You may even have realized that for you, dieting is not the answer you seek. You realize that your issue goes deeper, but you still don't know what you need to do to lose weight permanently.

The first step in your journey is to understand the reason you put on weight in the first place. It could have been during childhood, when your parents divorced and you had a whole bunch of feelings you didn't know what to do with. You could have been the child who was sexually molested and turned to food for comfort. You could have been the child who felt rejected, and turned to food for nurturing. Or you could have had parents who were overweight themselves and taught you to eat a diet of junk food, until it became habitual. The important thing is to get to the understanding of what caused you to gain weight in the first place.

On the other hand, you could be overweight due to one of these reasons:

  • You don't have enough time to prepare healthy meals and snacks and so opt for junk food, or you eat out often over work
  • You don't do any physical activity
  • You eat too much junk food
  • You don't get enough sleep
  • You have been on ongoing medication which may have led to being overweight
  • You stopped smoking
  • You eat when you are bored, or when you feel angry or hurt
  • Your childhood habits have followed you into adulthood
  • You have been through a pregnancy

Once you have identified the reason you are overweight in the first place, you can progress to the next step, which is to stop thinking about dieting and all you have previously learnt about losing weight, because the conventional way of weight loss - dieting - has not previously worked for you and will not work for you if you have any type of eating disorder. Habitual overeating or bingeing is an eating disorder, because you respond to food in an unnatural way.

If you have taken a few days to think about why you put on weight in the first place, and still can't come up with an answer, I would suggest you visit a counselor or psychologist to help you figure it out.

If you are someone who struggles with overeating, you need to change the way you relate to food. If you do this, it will lead to permanent weight loss.
