Identifying the Danger Areas of Blood Pressure

Blood pressure is comprised of two measurements including, systolic and diastolic pressure. Up until recently the rating for normal pressure, was a standard of 120 (systolic) over 80 (diastolic). Like most things, it has changed over time and now the American Heart Association (AHA) has deemed that a reading of less than 120, and less than 80, were more appropriate, due to research over a longer period of time.

For the purposes of identifying the danger areas, the AHA has additionally redefined the "normal" cut-off values for the different stages of high blood pressure. The reason behind the changes recently is due to the increased risk of heart attacks and heart illness whenever the blood pressure rises.

While the goal for everyone should be to maintain "normal" pressure in the blood, you need to understand your differences, such as that between adults, seniors and children. Blood pressure is the measurement taken as the heart pumps blood through the arterial and venous system. While a slightly less pressure in children, seniors will have a slightly elevated blood pressure. In an adult a reading of 140/90 or higher is considered not good and needs to be treated right away. Treatment may include a complete lifestyle change, especially in diet, and possibly medication.

Systolic and diastolic refer to two different stages the heart is at when pumping blood. Systolic refers to the high point when the heart initiates a pump, and diastolic is when the heart relaxes and is at its low end, and begins to fill up with blood to be pumped out again. In order for a doctor to take these readings they must use a sphygmomanometer, which can accurately measure the blood in the arteries.

It is not uncommon for people to keep a close eye on their blood, and it's a good idea to understand what a good blood pressure for you would be. In adults, typically between 20 and 40, it should be around 120/80. Of course it's not a perfect number every time, and throughout the day everyone's pressure raises and lowers, depending on a variety of factors. People that maintain a healthy lifestyle, diet and exercise on a regular basis, will more than likely enjoy a normal blood pressure. It's absolutely critical for our bodies to stay healthy, and to have a healthy heart. Without that major complications can occur up to and including death.
