I Want to Work From Home, But I Want to Be Sure I Join a Reputable Company

Expert Author Mindy Krueger

The first thing you need to do is take a good hard look at yourself. Why do you want to work from home? Your answer is going to be the thing that makes you continue to reach for your goals. Despite what all the ads say, working from home can be difficult. You've got to have a "why" that is going to motivate you through the dry spells. You need to be willing to put in a lot of hours for little pay in the beginning.

So, how do you choose a company? If you are a person of integrity, you are going to want to be sure that you are working with a company of integrity. There are many work from home opportunities out there. Make sure you do some research before signing up. Here are a few things that will distinguish a legitimate company from what is called a "pyramid scheme."

1. A pyramid has little or no product to sell. Money is made solely by signing people up, who sign people up, who sign people up etc... Please understand that most network marketing companies offer bonuses for new sign-ups, but the bulk of the residual income is made by product sales. A key thing to look for is if the company has customers, not just distributors. If you have to be a distributor to get the product, you will probably want to keep looking.

2. A pyramid is often short-lived. If you are going to join a brand new company, do you research. Read the policies and procedures. Read the terms and conditions. Learn more about who started the company. A new networking marketing company might be that opportunity you've been waiting for. Just make sure you look before you leap.

3. A pyramid will often have a limited time for you to sign up. If you are being pressured to sign up now because the opportunity won't be there tomorrow, walk away.

Let's say you've narrowed it down to a few good choices. Now what? Here are a few tips for finding the company that fits you best.

Is there a need for the company's product? Do people want it? Do YOU want it?

Are you excited about the product? Is it something you would use even if you were not selling it?

Is this a product you would tell people about even if you weren't selling it?

Do you like the company's compensation plan?

The above questions are probably the most important. The following questions address criteria that are good, but not necessarily required for you to have a shot at building a decent income.

Does the company have training available?

Is training available relatively near to where you live?

Is there someone willing to help train you? (even if they are not in your upline)
