I See Dead People?

Expert Author Michael Klein

If you are one of the 500,000,000 or so that use Facebook then you see dead people everyday without even realizing it. Recently more and more people are being asked by Facebook to reach out to a long-lost friend with those friendly little birthday and stay in touch reminders. However, the Facebook of today is not the hip, cool site that young people used to have all to themselves. Now most family members are connected by Facebook and as we grow older the inevitable is bound to happen.

Early on, Facebook was used by the GenNext crowd as a way to communicate and stay off the mainstream path - who knew? Now with the sites unstoppable popularity and older demo, more members are dying, and their ghosts are reaching out to us. You can even refer a friend, living or dead! But now that the site is a playground for virtually everyone from kids to Great Grandmothers, Facebook needs a solution on how to figure out when someone has died or do they?

Those little reminders can be very disturbing especially when a person is grieving over a friend or family members death. The site itself admits that they do not have a solution and are looking into software that picks up certain words used over and over again that could pertain to a persons passing. In the beginning the typical Facebook user was young and death was rare. Now however, the over 65 crowd has over 6.5 million new sign ups from May alone!

In the beginning, if prompted Facebook would delete the profile of the dead. However, now with the creation of tribute pages we have a way to keep in touch and deleting a users page is virtually impossible without the right information. You can contact Facebook with proof of death and they will take it under consideration but there are no guarantees. However, this is a wonderful opportunity for us mortals since we now have a way to keep in touch with our friends - in this world or the next.
