I Love the Game of Golf

Expert Author Chris Defalco

Golf has been my lifelong friend. I grew up around golfers, almost all my relatives played the game. My aunt was a scratch golfer, a member at the local golf club. Her husband was another scratch player, he could hit his approach shots as good as anyone I have seen. I would caddie for them on the weekends at the course, we would make the day of it because the golf club had a pool and tennis courts. The first nine holes was just being the caddie, when we would arrive at the tenth hole, my uncle or aunt would ask me if I wanted to tee one up and give it a ride. Of course I jumped at the opportunity to hit one; I always used the three wood, something about the weight, length, and look of it gave me a nice feeling. Concentration was very important because I only got one shot at it per hole on the back nine. That is how I learned to hit long tee shots, I started when I was the same height as a three wood. We played at this course until it became too overcrowded and busy with too many new members. My aunt and uncle were members there for just another few years. In the following years the owners of the golf course decided to sell lots on the course for houses, which brought in paved roads and many changes to accommodate all the new houses, cars driving by while you are trying to hit a good shot is not for me. I started looking for another course to play, I found what I consider to be my first choice in my group of courses to play.

My course is a great place to play but on the shorter side, but with all the challenges of a bigger and longer course because of the tight fairways, fast greens, water, bunkers, and trees. The first hole is a handicap 3 with O.B on the right. The fairway starts off flat then goes uphill to a crest about two hundred yards out, then it starts to go downhill with a bend to the right, downhill towards the green. This golf course has a nice variety of holes, number 2 can be as good as it gets if you drive over the corner of the dog-leg right, only 320 yards to the green on a great par 4. I have played this course so many times I can visualize every hole, yet every time I play here the course has a different feel that can you have to deal with. I have been playing at this course now for twenty years and still enjoy it every time, there is no where else like it. Every golfer I have brought to this course always falls in love with it, it is special. Just like most other golf courses, when one pars or birdies the first hole, the rest of the round can go quite well. On the other hand it can be a grind all day if you start bad; but just remember, you are lucky to be enjoying what you love to do, in the end we should all enjoy it regardless.

I am not sure how many golfers enjoy golfing alone, I have always enjoyed the opportunity to do so myself. I have gone out and played great golf alone for the pure pleasure of total concentration. I enjoy watching the ball soar off on line towards the middle of the green, and watch it as it rolls out a few yards from the hole. You feel a unique sensation in the lungs and heart, what great joy golf is. Try to stay on the fairway, keep out of the rough so you don't get behind, try to work smart and play smarter. The game has taught me discipline, patience, how to set goals and plan out strategies. Golf shots and personal goals are similar, take dead aim with both.
