I Have Rocks in My Yard

Expert Author Gene Wolf

I have rocks in my yard. I suspect almost everyone, except for those absurdly fortunate folks who live in Florida, do. However, when I say rocks I don't mean, "Man, I had better move this before I hit it with my lawn mower and it breaks a window" type of rock. I mean, "Man, where's the tractor and do I have enough chain to wrap around these suckers?" types of rocks. I had hundreds of these in my yard. No, no exaggeration.

At first I thought I was going to ask the Armed Forces of the United States if they would nuke my front yard. I thought that if they did that not only would the rocks be gone but I wouldn't have to mow the glass that would have resulted from the heat of the explosion. I didn't pursue that option though because on hearing the explosion I would expect some of my Tennessee neighbors might have gotten it into their head that this northerner was trying to outdo them and they'd come up with something that made a bigger bang and more glass. I firmly believe that, if they put their minds to it, they could have too! Since I enjoy my peace and quiet I decided to go a different direction.

What do you do with a yard full of rocks when you want to turn it into a yard you can mow? Well, you have to move the rocks obviously. The problem is some of these rocks were so large that moving them would have been a problem. Then the solution came to me! I wanted a fire pit where I could have evening fires to cook hotdogs and marshmallows on a quiet summer evening. I also wanted a flower garden for the birds that are abundant in the area. I had plenty of raw materials.

My brother-in-law has a tractor so I enlisted his help for a couple of days and we chained and moved the largest rocks into two large circles. You know, kind of a mini Stonehenge. The largest rocks were used as the base and the somewhat smaller rocks were placed on top of those until we had built up a structure about 10 feet in diameter and 2 feet high. In the one that I wanted to use as my flower garden I filled with garden soil. The other, well I had lots of smaller rocks left over and needed to get rid of those so I half filled that one with more rocks. It provides great air flow and excellent drainage. I've had a few fires in it already and it works like a champ.

The old expression is, when you're handed lemons, make lemonade and this is a prime example of using the lemons to make lemonade. If you have a bad situation try taking it and looking at it from a slightly different angle. That can often times give you a unique perspective and the solution. Failing that, consider moving to Tennessee and challenging your neighbors to see how big an explosion they can make. Then consider opening up a retail glass shop.
