What is a metaphor? A metaphor is a literary figure of speech clients routinely use to express feelings or ideas. By helping the client to change the modalities of a metaphor, an almost instant release can occur.
Client Created Warts For Attention
Such was the case of the client who kept creating warts. An eight-year-old boy created hand warts. He noticed and disliked seeing the increased number of them. His mother contacted a hypnotist for help.
Turns out during the session he discovered that he felt lost and invisible in the family with five children, four of which were sisters. During the session, it turned out that he felt like he needed to do something to get his 'fair share' of attention from Mom and Dad. His subconscious mind came up with the idea of creating warts.
He Consciously Wanted to Be Wart Free
Consciously, of course, he felt embarrassed with all those warts on his hands. So, the hypnotist suggested that it took energy to create those warts. The boy agreed. The hypnotist suggested that in his mind, the young boy pick a shape to represent what the situation look like.
She asked him to see a wart-creating shape (the metaphor) in his mind responsible for creating the excessive warts. She asked him what it was made up of. He told her what parts it was made up of.
It was made up of an angry robber who was stealing his 'fair share' of attention in the family. She asked what the robber looked like. The young boy described a dastardly looking figure wearing a mask with 'fire-blasting out of his eye sockets.' Each time the robber tried to get attention and was dismissed, another wart started to appear on the boy's hands.
An Epiphany
The hypnotist asked if the boy realized that this mental image of the robber was created by the boy. It suddenly dawned on him that what she said was true.
Then she said, "Would you like to change the shape somehow so that you feel like you are getting your 'fair share of power' once again instead of creating warts?"
He jumped at the chance to change it. She asked how he might like to change the way the robber looks. He chose to pour 'buckets of water' into the eyes of the robber. This imagery of pouring the water into the eyes of the robber resulted in the eyes changing color and dissolving the robber's power grab from the client. And, a change in the wart creation.
Warts Changed Size Within Two Hours
The result of guiding the client through changing the metaphor's modalities? Within two hours of the end of the session, the warts had already begun to change size. The mother couldn't figure out how the hypnotist had done what all the other wart removal remedies couldn't do.
On a follow-up phone call, the hypnotist of course gave all the credit to her creatively imaginative client. As you see, it really was the client who made up the metaphors. Having the client dream up metaphors is much more powerful and effective than the hypnotist guessing metaphors that often won't work for the client. And that is the value of having the client change metaphorical modalities!
