We all know how to write eBooks. Start your word processor and start typing. A while later it is done. Easy. But it's never that simple is it? There are often one of two big problems that hit us. These problems are in fact two faces of the same coin.
The first problem is the age old problem all authors face at one time or another - the dreaded writers block. I have certainly faced this problem (indeed faced it writing this very article). This problem can be many things - terrifying, soul destroying or annoying. But for me the emotion I feel most is frustration. Knowing generally what I want to say but being unable to say it - the empty white page staring back at me.
The second problem is perfectionism. When we write we have in mind the work of writing geniuses that we have read. And this kills our writing. We write a little, dismiss it as terrible. Delete it, restart, reform but not finished. Hours can be spent on a single paragraph or even sentence.
The two problems are related to each other. They both involve worrying about what is written before it is written. They both involve not expressing your thoughts and creativity. In the first case it stops even a single word. In the second it stops the writing flowing and the piece getting written.
Luckily for me I was taught many years ago a trick for getting past both these problems. This trick I've used over and over again and its never failed me. What is the trick? It's so simple.
Get it writ, then get it right.
What this means is just to write, no matter what it is, no matter how good, bad or nonsensical what you are writing is. Even if it to just write the same word over and over, eventually you will start writing your thoughts, and eventually the words will flow into something like what you want to write.
What we are aiming to do is to get our thoughts out and written down somehow. Once that is done, we can go back at our leisure and review it. Usually, we discover that a lot of what we have written is excellent and worth keeping.
The frustration that comes from writers block and perfectionism comes from having unexpressed thoughts in our heads, or knowing that the creativity lies within us but we feel unable to get it out. So that's why the key is to get it out however you can, and then fix what needs fixing.
Not only that it's usually the most time effective way to writing too. Deadlines (the curse of all authors) can be met a lot easier. When you think about it worrying about what is written before it is written is completely backwards. Especially if it is preventing you from getting work done. If you want to know how to write eBooks in a new way, try writing it first, worrying about it second.
