How to Write Lyrics

Expert Author Michelle Lawrie

So you've been humming a beautiful melody all day and everyone is asking - what is that song you are humming? Why, it's your song, except you don't have any lyrics yet. Where to start?

Some people can write lyrics with very little effort, however, for many it can be incredibly hard.

Fear not, there is a simple technique that I have found works very effectively.

Try to brainstorm lyric ideas first - spider diagrams are very useful for this.

• In the centre of your spider diagram start with a title for example 'Summer's Day'
• Next add words associated with this title e.g. hot/warm/sun/happy/bright/carefree/relaxed
• At this point you may get a few lines popping into your head, write them down
• Start to group certain words that sound good and form sentences with them

Once you have brainstormed and feel you have enough words, you can begin to write the lyrics.

Lyrics are the story of the song. Ask yourself, what's the story? Work from your own experiences and try to use them in your song. Once you have decided on your 'story' stick to it.

The basic structure of a song includes a verse and chorus.

Verses essential outline the story and contain between four and eight lines. The chorus explains the meaning of the song and usually contains the title. Again, it can contain between four and eight lines and is predominantly the catchiest part of the song.

It is important to note that lyrics DO NOT have to rhyme.

Carry a notebook with you at all times, sometimes the greatest lyrics can magically appear at the strangest times - don't let them get away.

Remember practice makes perfect, so keep writing.
